Cochin, a historic city with a blend of Portuguese and Dutch influences, a spice hub and the starting point for your Motorcycle adventure, is a veritable Eden brimming with treasures to explore. You'll wind your way through tea plantations, discover the wildlife of the national parks and the grandiose scenery of the Nilgiri mountains. The charms of Kerala? The backwaters, the winding canals, the peaceful lagoons, not forgetting the famous traditional Ayurvedic massages, the authentic cuisine and the warm welcome of the locals. This Motorcycle adventure in southern India is a true feast for nature lovers looking for a complete change of scenery and a gentle immersion in India's rich culture.
We spend the night in Kochi. This city, also known as Cochin, is located in the state of Kerala, in south-west India. Its architecture and port are a reflection of colonial influences: the Chinese, Dutch, Portuguese and British have left their mark all over the city.
For our first day on a MOTORCYCLE, we will follow a road along the Malabar coast - remember, it was along this coast that Vasco da Gama reached India and opened up the "India route" to the Portuguese. Then, following the country roads, we will reach the Kerala backwaters, a series of lakes and lagoons typical of this state.
Departure for Kumily, on the border with Tamil Nadu. A complete change of scenery. First the spice fields, then the Western Ghats. Older than the Himalayas, the Western Ghats mountain range boasts an exceptionally high level of biological diversity.
We drive to Munnar, a mountain town known for its scenic beauty. Munnar lies at an altitude of 1,600m and is surrounded by rolling hills dotted with tea plantations established towards the end of the 19th century. Tea growing is very important in Munnar and provides work for the vast majority of the population.
We'll spend the day around Munnar, a region well known for the beauty of its landscapes and its luxuriant nature. We'll be suggesting a range of must-visit places, of which there are many: Eravikulam National Park, Lakkam Waterfalls, Tea Museum, etc.
We set off for Kodaikanal. Mountain roads and fantastic views mark our route. A short crossing of the Tamil plains before climbing the Palani Mountains towards Kodaikanal.
We descend the Palani Mountains amid magnificent views towards the town of Palani, a holy city par excellence, with its many Hindu temples. We reach our destination through the countryside and its villages.
Following roads through forests and tea and coffee plantations, we climb towards Ooty, situated at an altitude of 2240m. The further we get from Palakkad, the narrower and more winding the roads become, with a large number of very sharp bends.
Our descent, sometimes gentle, sometimes steep, through the Mukurthi National Park and roads dotted with dense forests and plantations, will take us to the plains and Thrissur.
Here we are, heading for the beaches and Guruvayur, not far from the sea, a major pilgrimage site in the south for devotees of Lord Krishna. After lunch, we drive along the coast to Vypin Island and its miles of heavenly beaches.
There is a choice of walks among the palm trees, lazing around on the beach, then we take the road back to Kochi, passing through a canal of backwaters, villages and rice paddies, perfect representations of Kerala.
It's time to go our separate ways, as this is the end of our Motorcycle tour of the South. Your room is reserved until the time given by the hotel for check-out. Transfer to the airport.
We've always been passionate about travel and motorcycling, and we love sharing that passion. Thanks to our many years of experience we've been able to put together unique and surprising trips for our rider friends, giving them the chance to experience memorable Motorcycle adventures.
